Maxxun is a technology development company that is going to produce a new and revolutionary solar energy system that:
Generates low-cost solar electricity (€ 0.25/kWh)
at prices which are competitive with the grid in 2010
is 8 years ahead of competition in price/performance ratio
has both technical and aesthetic advantages
Industrial countries strongly depend on fossil fuels and its decreasing availability has an enormous impact on our economy and politics. Moreover, the use of fossil fuels contributes to climate changes with its negative consequences for the environment. Solar energy is the best alternative to fossil energy due to specific advantages over other sustainable energy sources such as wind and biomass. At the moment, the high cost of solar electricity, which originates from the high cost of photovoltaic cells, limits the widespread use of solar energy systems.
Maxxun overcomes this cost issue by using a Luminescent Solar Concentrator (LSC) which consists of a large area, polymeric plate with specific dyes and optical coatings that efficiently transport the sunlight to a small solar cell. This reduces the investment cost of a solar energy system and, more importantly, the total cost of solar electricity is reduced to less than € 0,25/kWh compared to € 0,40 - 0,45 /kWh of conventional solar panels.
Maxxun won first prizes in the business plan competitions of Innovact European Awards for Innovation (2005) and Kickstart (Dutch prize, 2005). In addition, Maxxun has won the Altran Foundation for Innovation Award within the general topic 'Technological Innovation and Energy'. The prize is a year of free technical, financial and application development support from the Altran Group.
